Voting Against

It's quite early yet for the 2008 Presidential election, but these CNN poll numbers are interesting:

Regarding potential Democratic candidates, 47 percent of respondents said they would "definitely vote against" both Clinton, the junior senator from New York who is running for re-election this year, and Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, the party's candidate in 2004.

Forty-eight percent said the same of former Vice President Al Gore, who has repeatedly denied he intends to run again for president.

Only 30 percent said they would "definitely vote against" Giuliani; 34 percent said that of McCain.

As for Bush, brother of the current president, 63 percent said there was no way he would get their vote. The younger Bush has denied interest in running for president in 2008.

Among all choices, Clinton had the highest positive number; of those polled, 22 percent said they would "definitely vote for" her.

Giuliani was next with 19 percent, followed by Gore with 17 percent, Kerry with 14 percent, McCain with 12 percent and Bush at 9 percent.

It's interesting how the "vote against" numbers are so much higher than the "vote for" numbers, and that there's a huge disparity in the "voting against" between currently leading Democrats and Republicans than in the "vote for" results.

Basically half the country will turn out just to obliterate the Democrat candidate, no matter who is running as a Republican!

Such are the wages of negativity and defeatism.

Racist School Admissions

Court to decide race in school admissions

Taking up a politically charged issue in an election year, the justices agreed to decide whether the need for diversity justified using race as a factor to determine which elementary and secondary public schools students can attend.

The high court was closely divided by a 5-4 vote in 2003, the last time it confronted similar issues in a pair of rulings that involved preferences for minorities in university admissions decisions.

Since when was a "need for diversity" a Constitutional basis for anything, let alone for allowing race-based discrimination?

A group of parents sued in 2000 and argued it was unfair for the school district to consider race. A U.S. appeals court disagreed and ruled 7-4 that the district has a compelling interest to secure the educational and social benefits of racial diversity.

That whole premise is ludicrous to start with.

May the Court rule correctly.

I look forward to the racist diversity-worshippers having their lights punched out.

This, however, has absolutely nothing to do with the administration's policies:

LONDON - Key Syrian opposition figures Monday urged Syrians to work to oust President Basher Assay by using acts of civil disobedience reminiscent to the upheaval that freed nations behind the Iron Curtain. [which also had NOTHING TO DO with the policies of the Reagan administration. -- ed.]

Describing Assay's regime as oppressive and corrupt, the leaders pledged to bring democracy to Syria, which has been ruled by Assay since the death of his father, Haze, in 2000.

"The people are fed up with the government," former Vice President Abdul-Halim Khaddam told The Associated Press after a conference uniting forces against Assad. "Of course they are scared. Our plan is to encourage them to get rid of this fear. ... The military is not going to get involved."

The Syrian military, no doubt, doesn't want to end up looking like the aftermath of the Highway of Death from Gulf War I.

Nazanin Update

Positive developments:

June 2:

The International Committee Against Execution have confirmed the report in the Iranian Newspaper "Hamshari" that Nazanin's execution has been commuted by Ayatollah Shahroudi (the Head of Judiciary). A retrial has been announced and Nazanin's case will be sent to a lower court for further investigation.

The saga continues, but hope remains. Thanks to all who made their voices heard.
