It seems the deliberate attempts by the Kerry campaign to casually "remind" everybody that Cheney has a gay daughter, first by Edwards in the VP debate, and then in a disgustingly calculated response by Kerry in the last debate, is backfiring.
Bigtime.
It seems they were hoping to turn evangelical Christians against the Bush/Cheney ticket, because obviously, Christians hate gays and everybody related to them, right? This really reveals how Leftists think, and how out of touch they are with what Conservatives really believe.
William Safire writes,
The sleazier purpose of the Kerry-Edwards spotlight on Mary Cheney is to confuse and dismay Bush supporters who believe that same-sex marriage is wrong, to suggest that Bush is as "soft on same-sex" as Kerry is, and thereby to reduce a Bush core constituency's eagerness to go to the polls.Fair game indeed!
The pro-Kerry columnist Margaret Carlson put her finger on it, finding that Kerry and Edwards "realize that discussing Mary Cheney is a no-lose proposition: It highlights the hypocrisy of the Bush-Cheney position to Democrats while simultaneously alerting evangelicals to the fact that the Cheneys have an actual gay person in their household whom they apparently aren't trying to convert or cure."
After the outspoken Lynne Cheney blasted this unsought intrusion of her daughter's private life as "a cheap and tawdry trick," the Kerry campaign hustled forward John Edwards's wife to charge that such motherly outrage "indicates a certain degree of shame with respect to her daughter's sexual preferences."
Worse than insensitive, that shot was off message, peeling the veneer off the Kerry-Edwards justification for making Mary famous: their oleaginous claim that, gee, they were only complimenting Dick Cheney for his fatherly tolerance. The crusher to that pretense came when the Kerry campaign manager, Mary Beth Cahill, coolly announced that the Cheney daughter was "fair game."....
And Kerry calls himself a Catholic (well, maybe not for long; see below!). His people seem to not realize Christianity, properly practiced, has its basic tenet to be "love thy enemy as thyself". To Conservatives, there's a clear distinction between people, who are to be universally loved, and the agenda of a small group of gay activists, which is opposed.
The Leftist, however, cannot separate identity from politics. It's a complete subjugation of individuality to group politics, based on approved victimhood.
That's why the professor in my post below can only believe opposition to same-sex marriage can only be motivated by homophobia, which is the same as racism.
What a gargantuan miscalculation!
So it seems the person with the real problem with religious groups is Kerry, with this amusing bombshell from the Catholic World News:
Kerry said to be excommunicatedWe live in interesting times. Can you believe it? Who could have imagined such a turn of events in an already wild campaign season?
Los Angeles, Oct. 18 (CWNews.com) - A consultant to the Vatican has said Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry has incurred the penalty of excommunication from the Catholic Church.
The consultant made his statement in a highly unusual letter to Marc Balestrieri, a Los Angeles canon lawyer who formally sued John Kerry in ecclesiastical court for heresy.
Kerry is Excommunicated.
According to the Vatican.
For Heresy!
[UPDATE: The Vatican states the letter's conclusions were unofficial.]
And religious conservatives including the likes of even Jerry Falwell are defending a lesbian's right to privacy!
Truly, can the Apocalypse be far behind?
